Tidal's Scheduler Expedites Payment Cycles and Drives High Level of Transaction Accuracy

PALO ALTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/09/08 -- Tidal Software, a leading provider of application scheduling and performance management software, today announced that 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds has deployed the Tidal(TM) Enterprise Scheduler to automate and ensure accuracy of the many complex benefits payouts the company processes on a daily basis. 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds jointly administers Taft-Hartley plans that provide health and pension benefits to hospital, nursing home and home care workers who are represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. 1199SEIU Benefit Funds are the 7th largest payer organization in the New York area, with annual revenues of $1.1 billion and assets of $8.2 billion. They provide comprehensive medical, hospital, pharmacy, and dental benefits to 475,000 union members, retirees and their dependents. 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds faces extensive daily processing tasks because they contract with providers, define benefit plans, receive claims, receive authorizations, adjudicate claims, and print checks, among other tasks. In addition these tasks are all conducted in a very complex and heterogeneous environment. Tidal's scheduler was selected to meet the organization's primary requirement of automating all these complex processes with a very high level of accuracy.

"Our members trust us not to make processing mistakes or take too much time with the process itself," said Ivan Kolodny, Director, IT. "We have a very complex sequence of events that must happen in a certain order on every given day so we can exchange the required files with the various trading partners, process the different enterprise platforms, and arrange for communications between our different enterprises. We absolutely needed a way to automate the entire system because it was getting more complicated every day."

There is a tremendous amount of money moving through the system at all times, and there is a lot of pressure on area hospitals. Our revenue cycles are very, very tight, and payments have to be expedited as quickly as possible," Kolodny continued. "Also, there are late payment penalties, and members become angry if their claims aren't paid on time. Before bringing on Tidal's Enterprise Scheduler, these processes were very decentralized and consisted of a combination of manual tasks, Windows and SQL Server jobs."

"We centralized everything using Tidal, from SQL Server jobs to normal SQL maintenance," said Donald Ngai, System Integrator. "We also have some old legacy software that requires users to conduct data entry, answer questions and run reports, so we had to keep an operator on site full time. If someone is sick there's a danger something wouldn't get run. By centralizing and automating these tasks with Tidal, we can eliminate human failure."

The company also recognized that because there was no central job-controlling authority, there was no single place to check status. In some cases, they couldn't enforce a real dependency relationship. That forced them to rely upon the expectation that a certain process would be done at a certain time. A dependent process might run on an independent platform and might be scheduled to start earlier. But if the first task completed early, the system would sit idle for quite a few minutes. This robbed them of vital processing time.

"It's the centralized monitoring and centralized error reporting that is making the most efficient use of our hardware," said Ngai. "Tidal also helps us manage all of the different trading partner connections we have. The level of automation we are getting is so vital because there are so many files that need to be transferred using different communications protocols."

The organization has also greatly benefited from FTP automation. They are no longer receiving complaints that files aren't received. Also, acknowledgements are sent promptly, and the overall transmission itself is much more reliable using Tidal compared to a previous product used. The person who used to manually download files would have to spend at least a half-hour downloading and then another half-hour to send the files. By utilizing Tidal 1199SEIU is now saving at least an hour of a person's time just on file transmission, plus there are no mistakes.
