Massachusetts Medical Society Selects Tidal(TM) Enterprise Scheduler to Support Growth and Ensure Excellent Member Service

Tidal's Enterprise Coverage and Ease-of-Use for Automating Complex Job Schedules Drive Decision

PALO ALTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/16/08 -- Tidal Software, a leading provider of application scheduling and performance management software, today announced that Massachusetts Medical Society, the country's longest continuously operating medical society, has standardized on the Tidal Enterprise Scheduler to improve business process efficiency and reliability. The IT team is planning ahead and has the goal of continuously providing valuable, quality information to its members on time regardless of growth and the increasing amount of information that must be processed. In order to do that, improved automation and visibility across the board were key goals that led management to select Tidal's enterprise scheduler.

Operating for over 200 years, Massachusetts Medical Society serves 20,000 physicians through its membership division and publishes the prestgious New England Journal of Medicine through its publication division. IT management realized that the data processing volume and complexities generated by these two business divisions would reach a point where they could not be thoroughly managed by datacenter personnel. Tidal's enterprise scheduler solves this problem because it simplifies enterprise scheduling and increases visibility of the performance of complex processes.

"Because we publish The New England Journal of Medicine, providing timely content is essential. The publication generates the majority of our revenue, so it's critical that accurate content flows through our processes correctly and in a timely way," said Mark Fungafat, Massachusetts Medical Society's director of software development and operations. "We download data from outside sources on a weekly basis. The data goes through several processes then is uploaded for online delivery. If this entire process is managed inconsistently, breaks or even stumbles, it could cause data to not get on the journal website or cause wrong data to be pushed out. We do not allow this type of problem to occur and wanted to ensure that it never does regardless of business growth or other changes. So we chose Tidal. This extremely critical process can now be reliably managed around the clock using Tidal's solution."

The IT team responsible for enterprise software development and management realized their jobs were becoming increasingly complex and that they needed to look into datacenter automation solutions to keep ahead of growing demands.

"We are heavily invested in SQL Server and the Microsoft platform, and running job schedules using functionally limited tools and manual scripting would not allow us to keep up with the demand. We began looking for tools that would give us better visibility and control so we could streamline our production job schedules. We needed a graphical interface that shows job execution and job dependencies because text-based or character-based interfaces don't work very well, especially in large production environments. After an extensive review of options with six of my staff members sitting in on each evaluation, Tidal's Enterprise Scheduler was clearly the most comprehensive and easiest-to-use platform. It provided all the control, broad coverage, and funcationality we needed."

The IT team also has challenges in evaluating alerts and identifying specific issues affecting the healthy functioning of business processes. As Fungafat explains, "We have all of these processes running independently, and we get emails about whether they succeed or fail," said Fungafat. "The problem is that we get two or three hundred emails a day, with no easy way to prioritize or organize alert data. Tidal's alerts will tell us exactly what the problem or even potential problem is, and provide the information we need to take prompt action."

The Massachusetts Medical Society runs a lot of database applications with many backups, restores and Data Transformation Services (DTS) packages across over a hundred servers. They also have many DOS-based batch files that copy data from one server to the next. Also, many of their DTS packages are complex, extracting data from one database, manipulating the data, storing it as a flat file, and then finally moving it into another database. They estimate that just troubleshooting processes via Tidal's graphical interface will save them as much as eighty hours each month.

Reporting was another key element for the company. Even though they don't run a lot of scheduled reports, the company moves a large amount of data related to financial reports from one system to another. The Tidal Enterprise Scheduler is able to manage that as well. Tidal's enterprise scheduler drives efficiency by centralizing control to one point of management. By applying a single enterprise job scheduling solution, the Massachusetts Medical Society can closely monitor all steps of each process to automatically detect and quickly recover from problems.

"Planning ahead to ensure uninterrupted, reliable customer service is smart move on the part of Massachusetts Medical Society's management and IT team," said Thomas Hooker, Tidal vice president of marketing. "A small investment today, will help ensure smooth datacenter operation regardless of future processing demands. With Tidal, their business processes can run more reliably, more quickly, and more smoothly than they would without an enterprise class solution like ours. It would serve all IT leaders to be as forward thinking as the team at Massachusetts Medical Society."
